Lost in the Maze

Unlike the vast souks of Marrakech, Essaouira's medina is on a human scale. Its grid plan (unique in Morocco) makes it easy to navigate yet rich in discoveries.

Sultanian Urban Planning
The medina was laid out with meticulous precision. Three main thoroughfares cross the city: Istiqlal Avenue, Mohamed Zerktouni Avenue, and Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Street. Around these axes, the souks are organized by trade, a medieval tradition that remains vibrant today.

Hidden Treasures
There is the jewelers' souk, a legacy of Essaouira's Jewish craftsmanship, famous for its silver filigree work. The spice souk (Rahba) is a feast for the senses: pyramids of cumin, saffron, ras el hanout, and medicinal herbs. Finally, the grain market, often overlooked, offers a glimpse into the rural life of the region. Etiquette: Here, negotiation is a gentle art. Essaouira merchants are renowned for their calm and courtesy. Take the time to discuss, accept a cup of tea, and understand the item before discussing price.
