Guardians of the Atlantic

Walking on the ramparts of Essaouira is like stepping back in time. These ochre walls, whipped by the trade winds, tell the story of an impregnable fortified city.

A Vauban Fortress in Africa
Designed by the French architect Théodore Cornut in the 18th century on the orders of Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, the ramparts of Essaouira (Mogador) are a unique example of the marriage between European military architecture and Moroccan style. The Sqala of the Kasbah, with its impressive line of bronze cannons pointing towards the ocean, served as the first line of defense against maritime invasions.

The Theatre of the Trade Winds
Today, these ramparts offer one of the most poetic walks in Morocco. This is where the "Taros" wind blows most strongly, creating a mystical atmosphere that has captivated artists from around the world, from Orson Welles to Jimi Hendrix, and more recently the Game of Thrones crew (Astapor). Insider tip: The best time to visit is undoubtedly sunset ("Golden Hour"). The ochre stone turns a vibrant red, contrasting with the deep blue of the Atlantic and the white sea foam. A free and unforgettable spectacle.
