The Gnawa Soul

You can't understand Essaouira without listening to the Guembri. The city is the spiritual capital of Gnawa culture, the descendants of sub-Saharan slaves who created a unique healing music.

The Gnaoua Festival
Every summer, the city pulsates to the rhythm of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, the "Moroccan Woodstock." But music is present all year round. In the evenings, in the zawiyas or small cafes, you can hear the rattling of the castanets (qraqeb) and the captivating songs of the Maâlems.

Healing Music
Traditionally, Gnawa rituals (Lila) are intended to heal souls and drive away evil spirits. It is a powerful, repetitive music that leads to a trance. Let yourself be carried away by this rhythm, which is the heartbeat of the city.
